2008-11-17 - Not What I Was Expecting

I've read most of the Shopaholic books, so I was naturally expecting "Remember Me?" to be a funny book. Surprisingly, it isn't. I don't think I laughed at all. The story is kind of flat. Even though the premise of the book is intriguing--the main character has a car accident and loses all memory of the last three years--not a whole lot happens. Also, the characters are hard to relate to. I love Becky Bloomwood of the Shopaholic series because she's quirky and naive. Lexi Smart, the title character in "Remember Me?," is not nearly as well drawn as Becky. I couldn't really relate to her, or to any of the characters. While her gorgeous, millionaire husband turns out to be not-so-perfect, I couldn't see what drew her to Jon. He's a nice guy, I presume, but he comes across as flat, like everyone else in this book.

But despite these misgivings, I'm giving this book 4 Stars because I think Sophie Kinsella is a very talented writer. I also give her a lot of credit for not wrapping up all the loose ends and for not turning this into a happily-ever-after fairy tale.

2008-11-08 - I was very pleased with this book

Although not as good as the Shopaholic series, I liked this book MUCH better than the Undomestic Goddess. I found it extremely difficult to put down and read the whole thing in one night! I would definitely recommend this book to any Sophie Kinsella fan; you will not be disappointed.

2008-10-26 - First Time Kinsella Reader

This was my first Sophie Kinsella book and it won't be my last. The story was well written and kept me turning the pages even while stopped in traffic. Really enjoyed the situation the heroine found herself in.

2008-10-25 - Fun, But Not as Good as Kinsella's Others

"Remember Me," by Sophie Kinsella, is a breezy read that you can finish in one sitting. I was looking forward to this book because I enjoyed the Shopaholic series and her other books. But, I don't think that this book was as good as her others'.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

I found the premise of this book lacking. I mean, sure, to get into it, you have to accept the premise that Lexi wakes up from a coma suddenly rich, with a high-powered career and gorgeous husband. But she spends most of the book going on and on about her palatial home and gorgeous husband--to the point that her choice to leave her high-powered husband, Eric, for architect Jon feel inauthentic.

The minor characters in this book are all over the place. You never really get why the sister is always in trouble or the mother is so repressed. Their characters are not really fleshed out and don't contribute at all to the plot.

I was also disappointed that Lexi did not regain her memory in full at the end of the book.

Overall, I thought it was an enjoyable read, but flat compared to her other novels.

2008-10-22 - Forget this book

I listened to the audio book, the abridged edition. I'm glad I didn't waste my time on the unabridged. I guess it was supposed to be humerous, but I found it dumb, the characters, the dialogue. They're too over the top. Ridiculous. Not worth the time.
