2008-11-05 - The Forgotten Man
The Forgotten Man is the best book I've ever read on the subject of the '29 Crash and subsequent depression. If you really want to learn about what really happened in this country nearly 80 years ago and how many of the Roosevelt policies exascerbated and prolonged the situation, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in that momentous period in American history, and how it relates to and if it compares to what is happening today in this country.
2008-11-04 - forgotten man
excellent, readable, analytical, for comparison with current World recession, explores real contributions of individual leaders, sees danger of too much government intervention.
2008-10-31 - FDR basher .. simplistic analysis
There are some interesting facts and research. The bias is unbearable (the author's main proposition is that FDR was always wrong, mean and evil -- if the US came out of the recession it was in spite of him. On the other hand Hoover would have saved the country). Do not expect an intelligent analysis.
2008-10-31 - What a timely lesson!
A history of how Roosevelt's massive government program's may have saved the country from a revolution but then prolonged the Great Depression. Amity Shlaes documents in impressive detail the fact that the President did not understand that without business confidence the economy does not recover quickly. He tended to frightened the owners of capital. Roosevelt's taxes and interventions caused a "serious strike of capital". Capital waited for "the experiments" to end. They only finally did with the beginning of World War II. In the present historic economic disaster we already have a war so the solution this time will have to be wiser regulation.
2008-10-31 - Hopefully America's future won't provide a sequel.
I do not know enough about the depression and how the different parties effected the great depression. I wanted a a brief summary about the depression, the factors causing it and the reason the economy recovered. I sure learned a lot about what went on during the time and how the decisions made were either detrimental to the state of the economy or were beneficial. I learned a lot about the key figures and the roles they played. It appeared to be an informative book. I'm not sure about right wing or left wing propoganda being the forefront of this book as other reviewers have stated. As for me, a novice at politics and history, this book was helpful and it mostly accomplished the goal I was looking for.
