2008-12-27 - Straight forward and very helpful

The book is truly about just the basics of bookkeeping but was extremely helpful. Although it did not go into detail about the issues covered in the book, there was enough basic information and things to take note of in setting up a bookkeeping system. It would be very informative for those who have no financial background. I also feel that those with financial background would benefit from having the basic neccessities drawn up in the concise manner this book offers.

What I found especially useful was the internal control checklist and the checks and balances table. Although many of these things could be considered common sense, again, it helps to have an already complied checklist. Being accountable, having transparency and implementing strong internal controls are aways things donors are concerned about.

The text itself was very straight forward and easy to follow, not too technical and without the round-about writing styles usually seen in academic writings.

This book will help you set up a bookkeeping system with good internal controls for a small non-profit organization, possibly even a medium sized one. However, keep in mind that as your organization grows, your financial and administrative systems will become more complex to accomodate your organization. Having a good foundation is key to this growth.

Unless there is already one, I would love to see a follow-up book from the same team. Perhaps something that will look into each of the issues in more detail.

2008-10-30 - Just what I was looking for

I needed a crash course in setting up a chart of accounts for a small not-for-profit organization. I have studied basic bookkeeping and accounting in school, but it did not go into nonprofit and fund accounting. This book was a great help.

2006-05-15 - Good resource for the basic concepts

Clear, practical and well-organized resource for new bookkeepers and accounting students without bookkeeping experience who want to better understand the accounting cycle. Very user-friendly.

2006-02-25 - A bookkeeping book for non-profits

The book is very good for an understanding of bookkeeping for non-profits with many reminders, charts and instructions. It continually emphasized what was discussed in earlier chapters. And, it gave a review of the bookkeeping basics. There is a lot of information for medium to large non-profits. The book discusses accrual and cash basis. This book would be a good tool for a medium or large organization. The book gave me confidence to do the job as treasurer of a small non-profit as I was reminded of the things I learned in accounting classes that I had many years ago.
