2008-11-12 - The Problem of Evil Seen as "No Problemo"
Dear Reader -- You will find many reviews that point out the many discrepancies between "The Shack" and the Bible. And like me, you will agree with some, disagree with others, and fail to comprehend still others.
My beef with "The Shack" is that it tries to tell us that when the main character's little girl is abducted and being tortured and murdered, she really did not suffer, because she was in the presence of Jesus. That she was in the presence of Jesus after she died, I do not dispute, but to make her murder less than horrible to the end is foolish poppycock.
Are we to believe, by extension, that when hundreds of thousands of innocent people die in a tsunami, they are in the presence of Jesus as the wave sweeps over them? That when children lie crushed and screaming in a collapsed school building, they are in the presence of Jesus? That when a bombed soldier observes his life blood soaking into the roadside sand, he is in the presence of Jesus?
My belief is that there is no rational explanation for the contradiction between evil (especially impersonal evil) and belief in a loving God. Much as it may irk the modern "scientific" mind to not be able to solve this problem, it remains amystery.
2008-11-12 - NEVER RECEIVED THE PRODUCT
I have never received the book THE SHACK. It was ordered on October 11th and today is November 12th. I contacted the seller via email two times and this is the 2nd time I have written a review saying that the product was never received.
2008-11-12 - Thought-provoking and possibly life-changing
The negative reviews here seem to be caused by an annoyance that this novel is not religion-based. Unless the Bible was written by the hand of God or dictated to man directly from the mouth of God, then it is merely just another interpretation by man, albeit the original one. I found comfort in William Young's interpretation of God and the Trinity. Raised as a Catholic, I was taught to believe in a punishing God and a God who should be feared. Who wants a relationship with someone they're afraid of? After reading "The Shack," I now feel as though God truly does care about me and that He really is a part of my everyday life. I've always been a spiritual person, but not one who wants to worship with a group of people in a "house of God." God is everywhere and "The Shack" reminded me of that. I honestly feel "changed" after reading this book. I find in myself more tolerance for others and more patience in dealing with life's little annoyances. A book that accomplishes that is nothing short of miraculous.
